Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) partnered with the Putnam Arts Council for his annual Earth Day Poster Contest, encouraging local students to showcase their creativity while promoting environmental awareness and sustainability.
Students participating in the contest created posters focused on protecting the environment and caring for the planet. Winners were selected with assistance from the Putnam Arts Council, which helped judge the submissions.
This year’s winners included:
First Place: Emilia Whitbourne (Grade 5, Haldane)
Second Place: Kate Adams (Grade 5, George Fischer Middle School)
Third Place: Piper Sherman (Grade 5, Haldane)
Honorable Mention: Abby Jones (Grade 5, Fulmar Road School)
Honorable Mention: Viviana Tufano (Grade 5, Fulmar Road School)
“The creativity and thoughtfulness displayed by these students was truly incredible,” said Slater. “This annual contest is a great opportunity to encourage young people to think about environmental stewardship and the importance of protecting our communities for future generations. I want to thank the Putnam County Youth Bureau and Putnam Arts Council for their continued partnership in making this event possible.”
Executive Director Joyce Picone said, “Assemblyman Slater’s Annual Earth Day Poster Contest, offered to elementary school children, is a program we here at the Putnam Arts Council always look forward to. Each year, the submissions are creative and original, and the Earth Day theme reminds the children how important it is to be kind to our planet. This year’s responses were varied, colorful, unique and inspiring, and the reception for the young artists and their families has been most rewarding. Although we help select several posters to receive special recognition, we believe everyone who participated is a winner! Hats off to Assemblyman Slater and all of the hard-working staffers at his office.”
County Executive, Kevin Byrne said, “Programs like the Earth Day Poster Contest are a great way to engage our young people in thinking about the environment and their role in protecting it. Through their creativity, these students are helping to raise awareness and inspire others to take pride in preserving our natural resources. I want to thank Assemblyman Slater and our Youth Bureau for continuing to provide opportunities like this that educate, inspire, and empower the next generation.”
