In celebration of National Read Across America Day, Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) visited the Brewster Public Library and the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Yorktown today to take part in a special story time session with local children. Read Across America Day, observed annually on March 2, is a nationwide initiative to promote a love of reading among young kids.

Assemblyman Slater was thrilled to share a story with the children and emphasized the importance of reading in early childhood development.

“Helping children discover a love of reading is one of the most powerful investments we can make in their future,” said Slater. “At a time when screens compete for so much of their attention, building strong literacy skills is essential. I was proud to spend time with young readers at the Brewster Public Library and the John C. Hart Memorial Library and encourage that lifelong passion for books.”

John C. Hart Memorial Library Director Yvonne Cech expressed appreciation for Slater’s participation, saying: “We’re delighted to welcome Assemblyman Matt Slater to the John C. Hart Memorial Library for Read Across America Day. His participation in this event shines a spotlight on the importance of early literacy and our community’s shared commitment to inspiring young readers and celebrating the joy of books together.”

“The Brewster Public Library was happy to host Assemblyman Matt Slater to read to our little ones during our Snowy Pals Storytime on March 2, 2026. Assemblyman Slater helped us celebrate Read Across America Day here in Putnam County and had the opportunity to meet both current and next-generation constituents,” said Brewster Public Library Director Jill Cronin.

Slater previously served as the ranking Minority Conference member on the Assembly Libraries and Education Technology Committee and remains committed to supporting libraries as vital community hubs. He continues to advocate for policies that strengthen library resources and ensure they remain accessible for all residents.
