SLATER HAILS COMPLETION OF ROUTE 202 CULVERT REPLACEMENT PROJECT IN SOMERS

Project part of previously announced $15 million state infrastructure investment in Somers; Route 202 reopens ahead of new school year

Today, Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) hailed the completion of the Route 202 culvert replacement project in the Town of Somers, an important component of the $15 million state infrastructure investment previously announced by Slater and state Sen. Pete Harckham for improvements in the Somers community.

The project replaced aging culvert infrastructure along Route 202 to strengthen the long-term safety and reliability of this critical corridor. Route 202 has reopened ahead of the beginning of the 2026-27 school year.

“This project required significant planning and coordination, and I’m thrilled to see Route 202 reopened ahead of the school year,” said Slater. “Since this investment was first announced, I have worked closely with the town and the Department of Transportation throughout the planning and construction process to make sure the project remained on schedule and that the needs of the community were being addressed. I appreciate everyone who worked together to get this done.”

Throughout the project, Slater worked with Somers Town Supervisor Rob Scorrano, the Somers Town Board, Highway Superintendent Nick DeVito, the Somers Central School District and the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) on planning, traffic impacts and maintaining progress toward the project timeline.

“This project is a great example of what can be accomplished when state and local government, our schools, contractors and first responders work together toward a common goal," said Scorrano. "My sincere thanks to Assemblyman Matt Slater, the New York State Department of Transportation, JR Cruz Corp., the Somers Central School District, the Somers Highway Department, our first responders, the Town Board, and the Route 202 Culvert Committee for helping bring this important project to completion.”

Route 202 serves as an important connection for Somers residents, businesses, commuters and the Somers Central School District. With construction requiring a temporary road closure, completing the work and reopening the roadway before students returned to school was a major priority for local and state officials.

“We are extremely pleased to see this project completed and Route 202 reopened before the start of the school year,” said DeVito. “A project of this size requires an incredible amount of coordination, and we are grateful to everyone who played a role in getting the work completed safely, efficiently and on schedule.”

The culvert replacement was part of a broader $15 million state investment in infrastructure previously announced by Slater and Harckham, which included improvements along the Route 202 corridor.

“When Sen. Harckham and I announced this $15 million investment in Somers, we knew these infrastructure improvements were badly needed,” Slater said. “But announcing an investment is only the first step. We stayed engaged with DOT and our local partners to make sure this project moved forward and that the work was completed according to the timeline presented to the community. This is what partnership between state and local government should look like.”

Slater has continued to advocate for increased state investment in Hudson Valley roads and bridges and for ensuring major transportation projects in the region move forward on predictable timelines.
