SLATER SECURES $1.5 MILLION IN STATE FUNDING FOR PUTNAM COUNTY'S FIRST ROUNDABOUT

New York State Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown), a member of the Assembly Transportation Committee,  joined Congressman Mike Lawler and local officials to announce a $10 million infrastructure project that will bring Putnam County's first roundabout to the intersection of Stoneleigh Avenue and Drewville Road. Slater supported the state's $1.5 million contribution, representing 15% of the project's total funding, as part of continued efforts to improve roadway safety, modernize local infrastructure and address transportation needs throughout the Hudson Valley.

The Stoneleigh Avenue and Drewville Road intersection has long presented significant safety concerns, particularly given its importance as an access route to Putnam Hospital. The planned roundabout is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance safety for motorists, emergency vehicles and residents traveling through the area.

“Bringing the first roundabout to Putnam County is an exciting milestone and an important investment in the future of our transportation infrastructure,” said Slater. “As a member of the Assembly Transportation Committee, I understand how critical it is to secure funding for projects that directly impact the safety of our communities. I was proud to secure $1.5 million in state funding to help make this $10 million project possible, especially at an intersection that serves as such an important access point to Putnam Hospital.”

“Getting this project to the construction phase has taken years of work from our local, state, and federal partners. I’ve worked to help advance this project and secure the federal investment needed to get it done. These improvements are about making our roads safer and ensuring patients, families, and first responders can get to Putnam Hospital safely. I appreciate Administrator McMaster and our local partners for working together to move this project forward,” said Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17).

“The intersection of Stoneleigh Avenue and Drewville Road has been a longstanding safety concern, particularly for the thousands of residents, patients, healthcare workers and first responders who rely on it to access Putnam Hospital,” said Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne. “This project is a major investment in public safety and our county’s infrastructure, and one that is long overdue. I want to thank Congressman Mike Lawler and Assemblyman Matt Slater for their leadership in securing critical funding and helping move this project forward. This is a great example of what we can accomplish when all levels of government work together to deliver real results for the people we serve.”

The project has been programmed for construction, and the Project Labor Agreement (PLA) has received final approval, marking an important milestone in moving the long-awaited improvements forward. Congressman Lawler's continued work and advocacy have played an important role in advancing the project and helping bring these much-needed safety improvements closer to construction.

The state's contribution accounts for 15% of the total project cost, with the remaining $8.5 million coming from other funding sources. The project highlights the importance of coordination among federal, state and local officials in advancing major infrastructure improvements while limiting the financial burden on local taxpayers.

Slater has consistently advocated for increased investments in roads, bridges and local transportation infrastructure. Earlier this year, he called for additional funding through the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) to help municipalities address rising construction costs, maintain aging infrastructure and improve roadway conditions throughout Putnam and Westchester counties.

“Whether it's repairing deteriorating roads, replacing aging bridges or making improvements to busy intersections, we need to continue prioritizing infrastructure investments that deliver long-term benefits to our communities,” Slater continued. “I want to thank Congressman Lawler for his continued leadership and advocacy in moving this project forward. His efforts have been instrumental in bringing us to this point, and I look forward to seeing these important safety improvements become a reality for Putnam County residents.”
