Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) joined colleagues from the Assembly Minority and Majority conferences last week for the second annual New York State Assembly charity softball game, bringing lawmakers together for an evening of friendly competition and public service at Hudson Valley Community College.
The game featured the Assembly Minority Conference’s “Barclay’s Bombers” squaring off against the Majority Conference’s “Carl’s Crushers.” After a competitive game that ended with Barclay’s Bombers winning 14-10, proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Food Pantries for the Capital District, which supports more than 70 food pantries across the region.
“It was great to step away from the Capitol and come together for something we can all agree on—helping those in need,” said Slater. “We had a great time, and I’m grateful to everyone who came out, played hard and supported an organization doing vital work to help families across Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties.”
“There’s nothing quite like a game of softball to bring people together, spark some friendly competition, and make a positive impact in the community,” said Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay (R,C-Pulaski). “The Assembly’s annual softball game is a great event, where Democrats and Republicans take their rivalry out of the Capitol and onto the diamond for a worthy cause. I want to thank everyone – on and off the field – who contributed to another successful year and supported this effort through generous donations.”
Assemblyman Clyde Vanel said, “We had another successful softball game this year against the Assembly Republicans. Unfortunately, we came up short for the win, but everyone won because we raised over $10,000 for the local food pantries in Albany. We look forward to next year to win back the trophy and to, more importantly, support good causes in the Capital District.”
