In July 2023, Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) announced the long-awaited resurfacing of State Route 52, made possible by $3.6 million in state funding secured through the partnership of state and local leaders. Assemblyman Slater and Senator Pete Harckham are proud to announce that the second half of this major infrastructure project is scheduled to begin in June. Nighttime paving operations will take place in the Town of Kent along Route 52.
The resurfacing project spans from Fowler Ave. in the Town of Carmel to just past the intersection with State Route 311 in the Town of Kent. In addition to repaving, the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) will complete necessary repairs to stormwater catch basins—improvements that are part of a broader investment in infrastructure aimed at strengthening the region’s transportation network and boosting climate resilience.
“Before we began this project, the Rebuild NY Coalition reported that more than 60% of Hudson Valley roads were in fair or poor condition—some of the worst in the state,” said Slater. “We made a commitment to turn that around, and we’re going to finally start the last phase of paving going up to the Dutchess County line. It’s been a long time in the making. I’m proud to work with our local officials and state partners to deliver for our community. Once complete, this project will mean safer roads, smoother commutes and stronger infrastructure for Kent and beyond.”
Senator Pete Harckham (D,WF-40th Senate District) said, “The investment to repave Route 52 from Route 311 to the Dutchess County line will significantly improve safety, reduce vehicle wear and tear, and support local economic activity by enhancing a key transportation corridor in our region. The project extends considerably the new paved surface of this road, which is a vital economic lifeline through Putnam County. I thank Assemblyman Slater for his partnership in pushing for these critical investments.”
Kent Town Supervisor Jaime McGlasson said, “After years of advocating for improvements to Route 52, I’m thrilled to see the second half of this critical roadway finally being addressed. This project will significantly enhance safety and quality of life for Kent residents. I want to sincerely thank Assemblyman Matt Slater for his partnership and tireless work in helping us secure the necessary support to make this happen. His commitment to our community has made a real difference.”
Kent Highway Superintendent Richard Othmer said, “The Town of Kent Highway Department is grateful to Assemblyman Slater for helping bring this much-needed project to fruition. Route 52 has been in dire need of attention, and for too long, Kent has been overlooked. With nearly 70% of our town located within the New York City Watershed, our ability to generate revenue is limited, but thanks to this partnership, we’re seeing real investment in our infrastructure. This is a win for our residents and our future.”
