Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C–Yorktown) visited with fifth-grade students at Crompond Elementary School on Wednesday, Nov. 12 as part of the school’s “That Ought to Be a Law Day,” an interactive civics lesson designed to introduce young people to the workings of state government.
“I was so impressed by the students’ awareness of the issues of the day and came up with some incredibly creative ideas for new laws. In doing so, they learned how legislation moves through the state Assembly and how their voices can help shape change. I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did!”
Slater emphasized the importance of civic engagement at a young age, adding, “When students understand how their government works, they understand how powerful their voices can be. Programs like this help build the next generation of informed, active citizens, and I’m grateful to Crompond Elementary for inviting me to be part of it.”
