Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C–Yorktown) has been appointed to serve on the powerful Ways and Means Committee in the New York State Assembly, one of the most significant and influential committees in state government.
The Ways and Means Committee plays a central role in shaping New York’s fiscal policy. It is responsible for reviewing all legislation that impacts state revenues and expenditures, including the state budget, taxation, bonding and other financial matters. As the committee that directly oversees how taxpayer dollars are allocated and spent, Ways and Means is critical to ensuring transparency, accountability and responsible budgeting for New Yorkers.
“I am honored to be appointed to the Ways and Means Committee and thank Leader Ra for this assignment,” said Slater. “This committee is at the heart of every major fiscal decision made in Albany. At a time when families are facing rising costs and economic uncertainty, it is essential we provide common-sense fiscal oversight and fight for responsible budgeting that protects taxpayers and strengthens our communities.”
“Assemblyman Slater is exactly the kind of fiscal leader the Ways and Means Committee needs. His expertise balancing Yorktown’s budget as town supervisor and cutting town taxes for the first time in three decades demonstrates his commitment to the taxpayers he represents. Having served as ranking member on the Ways and Means Committee for six years, I understand the level of expertise and discipline required to serve on this critical committee, and I have full confidence Assemblyman Slater will be a forceful proponent for fiscal responsibility on behalf of all New Yorkers,” said Assembly Republican Leader Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square).
In his first term, Slater served as the ranking member of the Libraries and Education Technology Committee, as well as on Governmental Operations, Oversight, and Real Property Taxation. In addition to his new role on Ways and Means, he currently serves as ranking member of the Election Law Committee and committee member on Environmental Conservation, Health, Labor and Transportation Committees.
Slater’s expanded committee portfolio positions him to play a key role in reviewing legislation that affects everything from infrastructure investments and public health funding to environmental policy and workforce development. His new assignment to Ways and Means further enhances his ability to advocate for Hudson Valley families and ensure their voices are heard in critical budget and tax discussions.
“As a representative of the 94th Assembly District, I take seriously the responsibility of safeguarding taxpayer dollars and pushing for policies that make New York more affordable and accountable,” Slater added. “Serving on Ways and Means gives me a greater opportunity to stand up for our region and demand better results from state government.”
