Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) presented a New York State Assembly proclamation to Yorktown Community Nursery School (YCNS) recognizing its induction into the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry, honoring the school’s more than 75 years of service to local families.
Administered by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the Historic Business Preservation Registry recognizes businesses and organizations that have been in operation for at least 50 years and have made significant contributions to the history and identity of their communities.
Founded in 1948, Yorktown Community Nursery School has long provided generations of families with a nurturing, community-centered early education experience.
“Yorktown Community Nursery School has been shaping young minds and strengthening families for decades,” said Slater. “For more than 75 years, YCNS has been a cornerstone of our community, giving children a positive first introduction to learning in a warm and caring environment. It is an honor to recognize its lasting impact and ensure its legacy is preserved as part of New York’s historic registry.”
Maribeth Fay, Director of YCNS, expressed her gratitude for the recognition.
“The children, staff and parents are excited and honored to welcome Assemblyman Matt Slater and to be included in the New York State Historic Business Registry. Since opening our doors in 1948, Yorktown Community Nursery School has been dedicated to fostering a love of learning in a warm, community-centered environment. This recognition celebrates not just our past, but the enduring bond we share with Yorktown families. It’s a privilege to provide a special first school experience to our youngest learners, and we look forward to serving this community for many more years to come!”
Yorktown Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman also praised the school’s longstanding community impact.
“The Yorktown Community Nursery School is truly deserving of this recognition after serving our community since 1948. For generations, it has been more than just a starting point for our children—it has also opened its doors to community organizations. I know personally that when my wife was in Girl Scouts, her troop was welcomed there for meetings. That spirit of service and community partnership continues to define the school today.”
Yorktown Community Nursery School joins other Hudson Valley institutions previously recognized through Slater’s nominations to the registry, highlighting the importance of preserving organizations that have shaped the character and history of their communities.
“Institutions like YCNS remind us that community is built over generations,” Slater added. “Their commitment to children and families reflects the very best of Yorktown, and I am proud to support and celebrate their remarkable history.”
