SLATER JOINS COMMUNITY EFFORT TO SUPPORT PUTNAM CAP 38TH ANNUAL BACKPACK DRIVE

Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) and Putnam Community Action Partnership (CAP) Director Marisa O’Leary

Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) and Putnam Community Action Partnership (CAP), marked the 38th annual backpack drive to support their vital community initiatives. As always, with the new school year approaching, and the skyrocketing costs of basic necessities, families around the community are struggling to purchase back to school supplies.

With the tremendous support from community members, and Slater’s continued advocacy, CAP was able to provide more than 300 backpacks and additional school supplies to those in need.

“For nearly four decades, CAP has been a cornerstone of our community, ensuring that children in Putnam County have the tools they need to succeed in school,” said Assemblyman Slater. “I’m thrilled to continue my support for this incredible cause year after year and bring the community together to help our students get off to a strong start.”

“The high cost of school supplies can contribute to educational inequities. Putnam CAP aims to address this disparity by ensuring that all Putnam County youth, regardless of socio-economic status, arrive at school equipped with the necessary supplies. Educational success is a key component to breaking the cycle of poverty. We appreciate Assemblyman Slater's support in this effort,” said Marisa O'Leary, Director of Putnam Community Action Partnership.

Slater recognizes the critical role Putnam CAP plays in helping vulnerable residents and has brought proposals to Albany to help address food insecurity and support for basic needs. One of his notable efforts includes advocating for universal school meals through legislation that would provide free breakfast and lunch to all students in public schools, regardless of income. Additionally, improving access to essential hygiene products. By advocating for state funding and policy changes, he strives to make these essential items more accessible to those in need, ensuring that families do not have to choose between basic necessities and other essential expenses.
