Assemblyman Matt Slater (R,C-Yorktown) has expressed strong opposition to a proposed policy under consideration that would create a mechanism allowing boys to participate in girls’ sports. Slater argues that this proposal threatens to undermine years of effort at the federal, state, and local levels aimed at providing equitable opportunities for female athletes.
“The proposed policy would prevent female athletes from pursuing scholastic athletics on a fair and level playing field,” said Slater. “This one-size-fits-all approach by the state government represents a severe overreach and strips local school districts of their ability to manage these matters.”
The New York State Athletic Administrators Association and school district superintendents across the Hudson Valley have also expressed opposition to this proposal. Local districts and their administrators have been handling these situations on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that every student has a fair opportunity to compete while maintaining safety and fairness in sports.
Slater emphasized the importance of local control in these matters, stating, “Our local districts have been effectively managing these issues, ensuring fairness and safety for all students. The proposed state policy would undermine these efforts and ignore the unique needs of our communities.”
